There is less than a week of school left, and the children are as enthusiastic as ever. Recently we've taken out some of the math games and puzzles that we haven't seen in a while.
We continue to use different types of materials to build the children's understanding of numbers. Base ten blocks like those below help with the development of place value concepts.
We continue to talk about strategies to develop the children's flexibility with solving problems, since we know that the strategy used to solve one problem may not be the most efficient to solve another.
There are lots of 'regular' games that you can play over the summer that can help strengthen your child's math skills. A favourite in our household is Yahtzee, a fun dice game that I've played with my family since I was little. Blokus is one that we've recently discovered, which is not number based but great for thinking ahead and learning strategy. Classic games like dominoes, chess, checkers and Snakes and Ladders are oldies but goodies. If you have some other suggestions, please leave a comment to let us know. Thanks!
Reminders:
- The K2 disco is at 12:30 in the Infant hall, followed by a little celebration in class. Children are welcome to come dressed as they wish that day (no uniform). Parents are welcome to join us, too!
- School will finish at 11am on Wednesday. Please send brain food and a snack as usual, but no lunch. If you are picking your child up that day, please meet us in the bus bay instead of coming to the class. Thanks!
