The children have been exposed to a range of materials to solve mathematical problems and show their thinking. They've had many opportunities to use concrete manipulatives, such as double-sided counters, pattern blocks and unifix cubes.
To help develop their number sense, the children have also been using materials to represent numbers in many different ways.
This week the children independently chose a number and then away they went! They selected from a wide range of concrete materials including pipe cleaners, dice and buttons.
Representing numbers in various ways helps young mathematicians to deepen their understanding of them. Observing how the children organise their materials is not only interesting, but can sometimes help us to determine their knowledge of numbers. For example, do they place ten cubes randomly or do they make two rows of five?
Numbers are everywhere, and are seen in so many different ways in the world around us. When you're out and about, take a look around. Where can you find numbers or representations of them? Your children would love to be number detectives!
